Did You Know that Sharks are not considered to be ‘social’ animals….

….and tend to be loners not living in social groups? Some sharks can be territorial and establish hierarchical positions often around feeding areas. Although some sharks function in a group working together, they tend to hunt alone as long as there are adequate food supplies available. Blacktip Reef Sharks though are often found to swim together in schools. Great White Sharks tend to swim alone but couples often swim together for long periods of time.

….and have to begin defending themselves immediately after birth? The mothers of sharks do not stay with the offspring to care after them.

….and are not considered to have a social hierarchy? They do not spend much time together such as with a pride of lions or a troop of gorillas.

….but tend to have higher survival rates as a social grouping than as solitary sharks?
