Shark Trivia
Did You Know that Canada is home to many kinds of Sharks….
….where 28 different species of sharks enjoy the longest coastline in the world, touching three oceans? 14 of these 28 species are commonly found including the Blue Shark, which is the most common shark in Canadian waters.
Some of the sharks commonly seen include: Blue Shark, Basking Shark, Black Dogfish, Bluntnose Sixgill Shark, Brown Catshark, Common Thresher Shark, Deepwater Catshark, Greenland Shark, Pacific Sleeper Shark, Pacific Spiny Dogfish Shark, Porbeagle Shark, Salmon Shark, Shortfin Mako Shark, Spiny Dogfish Shark, and Tope Shark.
Great White Sharks are now occasionally found including the massive Queen of the Ocean, a 17-foot, 3,541-pound Great White Shark found off the Nova Scotia coast in 2020. Researches name the approximately 50-year-old shark Nukumi for “the legendary wise old grandmother figure” of the Indigenous Mi'kmaq people, a First Nations group native to that region of Canada.
