Shark Trivia
Did You Know that the Akula Submarine was known as Russia’s “Shark”….
….and considered sharks “made of steel” that were extremely large at 564-feet long 74-feet wide? The large size was necessary in order to pack both missiles and a large reserve buoyancy into the bulk of the submarine. 8 of the massive subs were planned but only 6 were eventually built.
….because the word Akula (Акула in Russian) translates to “shark” in English? It was the Soviet designation of the ballistic missile submarine class designated by NATO as the Typhoon class submarine. These Cold War leviathans could devastate up to 200 targets with warheads 6 times as powerful as those that exploded over Hiroshima.
….and became widely-known because of Tom Clancy’s novel, The Hunt for Red October? Clancy envisioned a modified Akula-class submarine, Red October, whose disillusioned captain and crew were attempting to defect to the United States. The novel became a popular movie of the same name.
