Shark Trivia
Did You Know that Sharks like Hawaii….
….including about 40 species of sharks? The most common species found near Hawaii’s shores include the Galapagos Shark, the Gray Reef Shark, the Sandbar Shark, the Scalloped Hammerhead Shark, the Tiger Shark, and the Whitetip Reef Shark. Great White Sharks also call the area home but they are rarely seen in Hawaii.
….and although many can be found, they only bite only three or four people per year in Hawaii’s waters? Fatal shark bites are extremely rare, especially when considering the number of tourists, beachgoers, and surfers in Hawaii’s waters. Almost half of Hawaii’s shark attacks since 1882 have occurred off the coasts of Oahu and Maui.
….and have been revered in Hawaii’s culture and history? The shark, or mano, is woven into the fabric of the native culture where early Hawaiians worshipped, cared for, and protected sharks as aumakua, or family gods. Many others also viewed sharks an important source of food and tools.
