Shark Trivia

Did You Know that Papa fought a shark….

.….in The Old Man and the Sea, a novella  written by Ernest Hemingway in 1951 in Cayo Blanco (Cuba) and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction written by Hemingway published during his lifetime.

The novella tells the story of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who suffered an 84-day drought of not catching any fish. He finally catches a giant marlin far out in the waters off the coast of Cuba. His voyage back to shore soon revealed tougher struggles.

After beginning to tow the catch along his small boat, the fisherman has to fight off various sharks who attack the marlin. The fisherman sunk his harpoon into the head of the Mako Shark that initially attacked the catch and eventually sunk it, taking the harpoon with it. More shovel nose sharks later attacked the bloodied marlin and the fisherman worried that his struggle with the marlin was for nothing. Yet, he mused, “a man can be destroyed but not defeated.”

In 1953, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and was also cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to their awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954.
