Shark Trivia

Did You Know that Goblin Sharks are tied to Japanese folklore….

….and are named after Tengu, a Goblin-like creature from Japanese folklore? It is an interpretation of the Japanese word tenguzame.

Tengu are considered a type of yōkai (supernatural beings) or Shinto kami (gods). Stories of the mythical creatures date back to the 7th century but their reputation grew more prominent in the 12th and 13th centuries with stories of their adventures and their attacks on the imperial family.

Red-faced masks with frowning brow and comically-long noses are common in Japan.

The Goblin Shark is a rare species of deep-sea shark with pink-skin and a distinctive elongated, flat snout and highly protrusible jaws containing prominent nail-like teeth.
