Shark Trivia

Did You Know that what is considered the worst shark attack in history….

….occurred in 1945 during World War II after the USS Indianapolis delivered the crucial components of the first atomic bomb that would level Hiroshima?

While sailing from from Guam to the Philippines to prepare for an invasion of Japan, Japanese torpedoes hit the Indianapolis and the ship sank in just 12 minutes. 900 men made it into the water alive. Survivors began forming groups in the open water where they would be staving off exposure, thirst and sharks.

Though many species of shark live in the open water, historians believe that most of the shark-related causalities came from the Oceanic Whitetip Shark.

Of the original 1,196-man crew, only 317 remained. Estimates of those who died from shark attacks range from a few dozen to almost 150.
