Shark Trivia
Did You Know that the Fin of a Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias)….
….is a way to identify each unique shark? While there are many ways to tell sharks apart from each other, scars, coloring, and body markings help create a fingerprint unique to each shark. Most Great White Shark researchers use a technique called "dorsal fin ID" in order to identify each unique animal. The fins are full of patterns of notches which scientists catalog in a database and use to tell each one apart.
All Great White Sharks are born with dorsal fins atop their bodies. This fin is made out of soft cartilidge tissue.
Researches use these fins to track sharks over many years. Dorsal fins can and do often change in appearance over time so it is important to get up to date photos of the sharks’ fins.
