Shark Trivia

Did You Know that the Biggest Sharks are filter feeders….

.….including Whale Sharks, Basking Sharks, and Megamouths? They are called “filter feeders” because they open their mouths wide to swallow massive amounts of water while they consume plankton, krill, sardines, etc. They filter the water through their gill-rakers, the comb-like bristles in their throats that sieve these animals out of the water.

Whale Sharks, for example, filter around 2 million liters of water for every 2 kg of food. Whale Sharks can only swallow small prey because their esophagus is only a few inches wide.

In comparison, the Blue Whale, a mammal and the world’s largest animal, is also a filter feeder.
