Shark Trivia
Did You Know that Sharks do not have a Voice….
….to say anything because they do not have the special organs required to produce sound or communicate? Their anatomy does not include vocal cords.
….unlike their noisy oceanic neighbors including singing whales, yapping and clicking dolphins, and burbling fish? Sharks are by and large silent hunters. They may be able to make hydrodynamic sounds when swerving and accelerating or when they make crunching sounds with their teeth and jaws.
….but one type of shark may bark? There are persistent reports from fishermen in New Zealand about the Draughtsboard Shark that is well known for its sound-producing proclivities that resemble a bark. One possible explanation is that the Draughtsboard Shark, a member of the same genus that includes the Balloon Shark and Swell Shark, may produce a sound when it inflates itself like a pufferfish when threatened. Trapped air passed out of the shark's stomach in an explosive rush may be able to create this barking sound.
