Shark Trivia
Did You Know that Scylla (or Skylla) was a “dog shark” who….
.….was written about in multiple works including Homer’s The Odyssey. Authors often described her of various parents but some wrote of her as the daughter of the shark-like monster Lamia.
According to late classical writers, she was once a beautiful nymph loved by the sea-god Glaucus. Her jealous rival, the witch Circe, used magic to transform her into a sea-like monster.
Descriptions of Scylla often come from the imagery of words associated with her name including "hermit-crab" (Greek skyllaros) and "dog" and "dog-shark" (skylax).
She was a supernatural creature with 12 dangling feet and six long long snaky necks, each with a head having a triple row of sharklike teeth. Her loins were girdled by the heads of baying dogs.
From her lair in a narrow passage of water between two rocks between Italy and Sicily, she devoured whatever ventured within reach, including six of Odysseus’s men.
