Did You Know that Shark attacks caused a national panic on the Jersey Shore….
.….during a series of shark attacks called the “12 days of terror” where 4 people were killed and 1 was injured off the coast of New Jersey between July 1 and 12, 1916? The attacks occurred during a deadly summer heat wave in the United States that drove thousands of people to the seaside resorts of the Jersey Shore.
The sensational news coverage and national reaction to the fatalities created a wave of panic that led to shark hunts aimed at eradicating the "man-eating" sharks in New Jersey's seaside communities. Resort towns even enclosed their public beaches with steel nets in order to protect swimmers. The attacks also entered into pop culture where sharks became featured as dangerous in editorial cartoons.
Scholars have long debated which species was responsible as well as the number of sharks involved. The Great White Shark and the Bull Shark have been cited most frequently.
The attacks forced ichthyologists to rethink their common beliefs about sharks and the nature of shark attacks.
